(1896-1987)
   painter, engraver, stage designer
   A leader of the surrealist movement, André Masson was born in Balagny, oise, and studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. After a cubist period in his art, he developed a more mysterious and symbolic style. Early in his career, he was attracted to surrealism, and his interest in the unconscious mind led him to experiment systematically with automatic drawing, using pencil and ink and later textured accretions of pigment, sand, and glue. Masson was influenced by other surrealists, especially André Breton, and during World War II (1939-45), he moved to Martinique and then to New York City. He had a notable influence on action painting in the united states and on a number of American artists. in 1947, he settled near Aix-en-Provence and produced a series of landscapes (Paysages provençaux). In 1965, he was asked by andré malraux to design the stage of the Odéon Theater in Paris and to illustrate his books.
